ProKris employs an innovative new process to extract sugar from a sugar-containing feedstock which is much more efficient than traditional processes. Unique about this process is that the efficiency gain results in small-scale refining costs that are comparable to large-scale refining, enabling decentralized sugar production. This eliminates the need to transport sugar beets, containing >75% water, over long distances. Furthermore, the process is suitable for a very broad range of feedstock such as sugar beets, sugar cane and waste fruit or vegetables. Also more non-traditional feedstock such as black liquor and dairy waste may be used to produce sugars.
Due to the superior energy efficiency, the carbon foot print of a ProKris sugar refining unit is much better than that of a traditional refinery. Not only is the process itself much more energy efficient, the local character of a ProKris unit slashes the need to transport sugar beets over large distances and the carbon emissions associated. Furthermore, being close to the originating sugar beet fields creates the possibility to recycle high-mineral waste streams to the farm lands, decreasing the need for artificial fertilisers.
